9. Configuring the NVDA.
9.1. General Options.

The Options dialog box General is found within the preferences menu and contains the following options:
Language: a combo box that allows you to select the language to appear. There are many languages, and the last item in the list is called "Windows". This option causes the NVDA use the same language that Windows is currently using (in the control panel). Note that NVDA needs to be restarted after selecting to another language. NVDA will ask if you want to restart as soon as you select the new language and press OK.
Save Settings on Exit: checkboxes as NVDA to automatically save the current configuration on exit NVDA.
Warn Before Closing NVDA: checkbox that allows you to choose whether or not NVDA should ask if you are sure when you want to exit the program;
Degree of information in the log: combo box lets you choose how NVDA will record their activities while running. In general, users do not need to move this option, since the normal is not in a high level. However, if you want to provide information for reporting a bug, etc.., Then it may be a good idea to check this option to a higher level.  9.2. Synthesizer.

The item synthesizer, which can be found in "Synthesis ..." in the Preferences menu, allows you to select which synthesizer NVDA should talk. In this item, there will be a simple combo box that lists all available synthesizers. Select the synthesizer you want using the arrow keys and then press ok. If an error when running the synthesizer, a message box will alert you to this fact, and keep the old synthesizer running.
The current list of synthesizers that NVDA supports it: eSpeak, SAPI4, SAPI5, Audiologic, Display, and Silence.
ESpeak synthesizer is built directly into NVDA and not depend on any special driver or tool for speech engines to be installed. NVDA start using eSpeak by default. This synthesizer should work on any system that runs the NVDA. So definitely it will work when running NVDA from a USB device or CD, in any system. The options are so that it can be replaced.
NVDA currently has two drivers SAPI4. Because users have reported different results for both drivers, try to work with both and see which one works best for your needs.
Synthesizer display is useful for developers who want to read what they're talking about NVDA, NVDA to test with your applications.
The driver synthesizer Silence is not that useful, unless you want to not only speak while NVDA is running.
Note that no matter how many voices SAPI4 or different SAPI5 you install on your system, just synthesizers SAPI4 and SAPI5 itself appear in the item Synthesizers. To select one of the voices, select SAPI4 or SAPI5 and then the item Voice Options you can choose the voice you want.
9.3. Voice Options.

The Voice Options item, found in the Preferences menu contains options that let you change the sound of speech. You can also configure many of the options from any location by pressing Control + INSERT with one of the arrows. The arrows on the left and right allow you to browse through the various options, and the up and down allow you to increase or decrease particular option.

The dialog box contains the following options:

A combo box listing all the current synthesizer voice. You can use the arrows to hear all the options of voices.
Variant

Speed:
Option that goes from 0 to 100 (0 being the lowest speed and the largest 100).
Tom:
Option that goes from 0 to 100 (0 being the lowest note and 100 the highest).

Speak all punctuation:
A checkbox that when checked, causes the NVDA speak all punctuation symbols such as words (very useful for writing reviews). When not checked, NVDA will read the sentences in correct intonation, but will not speak the punctuation symbols.
Saying Cap before Uppercase:
A checkbox that when checked, causes the NVDA say "ch" before an uppercase letter, when passing through it with the arrow keys or talking them to enter. Generally, NVDA slightly increases the tone for any capital letter, but some synthesizers may not support this feature as well.
Capitalized beep:
If this box is checked, NVDA will make a short beep every time you are talking about an uppercase character. As in the previous option, this tool can be useful for synthesizers that do not change the tone for letters.
