Safety Department will buy 400 PM breathalyzers to detect drivers who are drunk.

Prohibition, which punishes those who drive drunk, already reduced by 55% the number of victims of traffic accidents in the state capital, during the weekends. The survey is the state Department of Health and was based on reports from three major hospitals in Sao Paulo specializing in trauma care.

A report prepared by the police the night between Friday and early on Monday showed that 56 drivers were fined and 21 were arrested after the breathalyzer test.

On the last weekend, were treated 51 victims of traffic accidents. In the first weekend of validity of the new legislation, the penultimate month of June these hospitals had 114 calls.

Between 27 to 29, were 92 calls.

The Hospital Complex in the north, 15 patients were victims of accidents in last weekend. In the former, were 42 and in the first weekend after the law, 45.

In the Southern Regional Hospital in Santo Amaro, in the south, were carried out only nine calls to victims of accidents this weekend, against the previous 26 and 36 on the penultimate weekend of June.

Other states have reported reduction in the Hospital of 27 patients attended the past weekend. The number was higher than 24 calls from the previous weekend, but still below the 33 recorded between 20 and 22 June. On 13 to 15 June, the HC had treated 38 people by accident.

For Secretary of Health, Luiz Roberto Barradas Barata, the data indicate that in fact the intake of alcohol was factor in traffic accidents, especially on weekends.

Other states also have reported reduction of accidents.

In Goiania, the past weekend, the Hospital Accident and Emergency (the most important state) fell from 277 to 211 calls. In Bahia, where the PM is doing strict enforcement of Prohibition, the hospital has not closed but the numbers have confirmed the reduction of care of victims of traffic accidents.

Sao Paulo will invest U.S. $ 2.6 million in breathalyzers The Public Safety Department of Sao Paulo said yesterday that by the end of the year for $ 2.6 million will be invested in the purchase of 400 breathalyzers, for the PM to monitor whether drivers are driving drunk.

Of the total of new equipment, will go to 298 cities in the state. E 102 breathalyzers will be used to strengthen the supervision of PM in the capital. Currently, the PM has 51 equipment to monitor the city of Sao Paulo.

Last Sunday, the newspaper Diario de Sao Paulo found that outside the capital and highways, the police blitzes are not made for lack of equipment. The newspaper asked the PM, by telephone and email, as it has to review in some major cities in the state - Campinas, Sao Jose dos Campos, Sorocaba, Ribeirao Preto, Santos and Sao Jose dos Rio Preto - since the entry into force of Prohibition.

The PM did not respond.

The devices are being used by police to check whether drivers are driving drunk. Under the new Law 11.705 of 20 June amending the Brazilian Traffic Code, the limit is 0.3 mg of alcohol per liter of air expelled in the breath. Who is caught driving after drinking, you have to pay a fine of R $ 957.70 and will lose the wallet for a year.

Anyone with more than 0.3 milligrams of alcohol in addition to paying the fine, is likely to respond to crime, with punishment ranging from 6 months to 3 years in prison.

The driver can only respond in freedom bail ranging from $ 300 to $ 1,200. The exact value is decided by the delegate.
