Surely this remarkable work of Pete Riley, drummer and teacher very
active on
the UK scene, since it goes in depth to deal with the use of double bass
and its
applications by the most famous drummers. The book comes with a CD in
which they
are shown all the topics which the author reveals some very impressive
performance.
It starts with an interesting discussion on the feel and technique of the pedal, and you come immediately to the teaching with the introduction of the concept of single strokes, the development by the linear phrases, with different combinations of sixteenths, eighths, triplets and the various developments throughout the set. It goes with the use of phrases in the thirty-linear, in the most beautiful and creative as possible. Beautiful sections dealing with the unison, modulations and their use in a variety of groove (the impressive performance of the different types of shuffle). Not to mention the use of different types of ruff, the stubborn and some demonstrations of just really wonderful. But surely this description does not do justice to the book and all the topics that are impossible to list in full, because it would take several items separately. It's amazing how in listening to many of the examples you can immediately recognize the phrases used by well-known drummers, on this - above all - a major operation conducted by the author of the study. Ultimately, the book is a comprehensive guide and different from everything that has been published so far, and which addresses in detail all aspects and creative use of double bass. Absolutely essential for anyone who wants to seriously learn or improve this technique.
