'No' English-only - First ladies walk two miles to cast their votes

A day after their husbands cast ballots against the English-only initiative, the wives of the governor and mayor went to the polls and voted the same way today.

Andrea Conte and Anne Davis, the first ladies of Tennessee and Nashville, respectively, walked almost two miles with supporters from the Metro Courthouse downtown along Second Avenue to the Davidson County Election Commission offices at the Metro Office Building.

They were joined by Martha Cooper, wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Nashville. Cooper has already cast his vote against it. He was out of town and couldn't vote with the governor and mayor.

They cast early votes against the English-only amendment. Early voting started on Jan. 2 and ends Saturday. The special election is on Jan. 22.

The measure would force all Metro Nashville government business to be done in English unless the council passed exceptions.

On Monday, Gov. Phil Bredesen and Nashville Mayor Karl Dean voted against the measure and urged voters to defeat it. They say it will harm the city’s reputation and business development if Nashville is seen as an unwelcoming place.

Metro Councilman Eric Crafton, the English-only measure's primary supporter, has said the governor should work on fixing the state’s deficit and not worry about a local issue.
