Governor Phil Bredesen and the Tennessee Department of Education announced $12.3 million in grants for Coordinated School Health Partnerships (CSHP).

CSHP partner families, community members and schools to create a culture focused on health awareness, physical activity, and health, nutrition and counseling services.

"These partnerships help give Tennessee students a more beneficial environment in which to learn and a foundation for making good choices outside of school," Education Commissioner Lana Seivers says in a statement. "By involving parents, teachers and regular citizens, we have the chance to change the culture of entire communities for the better."

Tennessee piloted 10 CSHP in 2002 based on a model developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last year, Tennessee became the first state in the nation to mandate and fund CSHP for every school district in the state.

This year's funding will help schools launch or continue their programs.
