Council defeats plan to transfer thermal site to MDHA PDF Print E-mail

Legislation that would have transferred the old downtown thermal site to the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency was defeated by one vote last night at Metro Council.

The main argument for defeating the bill - advanced by outgoing Green Hills Councilman Jim Shulman - is that the issue should be taken up by the new Metro Council and mayor.

The high-profile site - 11.5 acres along the river between the Shelby Pedestrian Bridge and the new Gateway Bridge - has been the center of attention from the development community for several years.

The Nashville Sounds ballpark was proposed until the deal collapsed earlier this year.

Mayor Bill Purcell has supported the legislation and has said he prefers a public performance venue at the site.
