Mobil Delvac is sponsoring the upcoming tour of The Grascals, an award-winning bluegrass band that plans to play 100 dates over the next year.

As the group makes its cross-country trek, its tour bus will be wrapped with the Mobil Delvac logo. The bus will run on Mobil Delvac’s diesel engine oil and the band will make several appearances throughout the year at industry events and retail locations in support of the brand.

Mobil Delvac is owned by ExxonMobil Lubricants & Petroleum Specialties Company, a division of Exxon Mobil Corporation.

The Grascals earned Grammy nominations for their first two albums, “The Grascals” and “Long List of Heartaches.” They were the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainers of the Year in 2006 and 2007 and frequently appear on the Grand Ole Opry.

They have opened for Dolly Parton and played with Brooks & Dunn, Dierks Bentley, Patty Loveless, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers, Vince Gill and more.

The value of the Mobil sponsorship was not disclosed, but tour sponsorships are an increasingly important piece of a band’s total revenue package.

Big sponsors typically pay most or all of tour production costs, allowing bands to reap more money from ticket and merchandise sales. In exchange, the band allows signage and promotional activities at concerts, makes appearances at corporate events and otherwise acts as ambassadors for the brand.

Last year, JC Penney signed a three-year title sponsorship deal with Rascal Flatts in which the country-pop trio agreed to appear in television commercials, wear its American Living line of clothes onstage and record a song only available on CDs sold at the retail chain. JC Penney’s access to the band’s massive fan base included high-profile events such as a sold-out performance at Wrigley Field in Chicago this summer and an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show last month.
