The global arm of a local company is supporting a competing country’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in 2018. STR Global, the London-based branch of Hendersonville-based Smith Travel Research, announced yesterday that it has reached an agreement with England’s bid committee to provide hotel performance and supply data. The United States hopes to host the tournament in 2018 or 2022. Nashville is one of 18 cities included in the bid and could host games or a media headquarters if the U.S. is selected. “We are proudly supporting England’s 2018 World Cup bid and are delighted to assist in the efforts to bring this world class event back to these shores,” Elizabeth Randall, Managing Director of STR Global, said in a news release. Company officials would not say today whether they are providing similar services to the U.S. bid committee or how much England is paying for its services. “We will assist any client or city with our expertise on hotel markets and wish good luck to all potential candidates,” STR Global Director of Marketing Konstanze Auernheimer wrote in an e-mail. Metro Nashville government and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau pledged extensive coordination, planning and financial support in their application to be included in the U.S. bid. |
