YMCA of Middle Tennessee is closing its Uptown location next month. According to a flier given to Uptown members, the location will close outright, not relocate, by Nov. 30, when its lease expires. The Uptown Y, located on the 30th floor of the Fifth Third Bank building at 424 Church Street, is blocks away from the newly renovated Downtown YMCA, located at 1000 Church Street. The revamped downtown location has hurt membership at the uptown location, staff said. “A big factor in allowing the lease to expire was certainly our massive renovation and expansion (at the Downtown Y),” said Jessica Fain, spokeswoman for the YMCA. She said the newly remodeled Downtown Y will easily absorb Uptown’s 500 membership slots. Fain said the Uptown center has five employees, two of which are full-time. While one full-time employee will move to a new role within the association, she said the YMCA is continuing to discuss “the potential pursuit of other opportunities at other locations with the remaining four employees.” The Uptown center opened in 1991. |
