her_adventures_july.jpgWhen you think about Middle Tennessee water sports, scuba diving may not immediately come to mind. However, this fantastic adventure option is revered by many locals as the water sport of choice. You’ll find a large population of local divers and dive shops around town making it quite easy to get plugged in to this awesome extracurricular activity.

Serenity Now
Scuba diving is one of the most peaceful activities earth offers. The beauty of a reef and the marine life that inhabits it ... the thrill of discovery deep inside a wreck or cave ... the sheer enjoyment and serenity of the underwater experience ... all are reasons to dive. Plus, almost anyone can do it. You don’t have to be super-fit or able to hold your breath for a long time. You just need to be in a state of good health and able to swim and tread water.

Perhaps the best part is that you can scuba dive anywhere you can find water. And, since more than two-thirds of the planet is covered in H2O, that leaves many options. Tropical coral reefs tend to be most popular, but there are also many wonderful things to be found in cold water environments like lakes, rivers and quarries. Generally venturing as far down as 130 feet, divers can explore everything from reefs to wrecks and all the fish in between. First Dives Club | Travel

What is Scuba?
An acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, “SCUBA” describes the gear needed for underwater breathing. The “scuba unit,” which is worn by a diver, provides a continuous source of air. In addition to the tanks, which are filled with compressed oxygen, divers also don body-hugging wetsuits or drysuits (which one is worn is determined by water temperature) as well as masks and fins, which help them propel through the water. Divers also employ buoyancy control devices, which help them sink, hover or float in the water. But before any of these can be put to use, a diver must be certified!

Before You Dive, Get Certified
Scuba certification proves to commercial operators and dive clubs everywhere that you have received a minimum level of training. To get certified, sign up for an Intro to Scuba class, which will instruct you on all the necessary safety skills and provide familiarity with the breathing apparatus and other equipment. The instruction also provides practice and a gradual increase in experience to build confidence in the equipment and your body’s reactions to underwater diving. After the classroom and pool experiences, an open water-certified dive is required to complete the certification.
